Acting Notes – Acting On Camera
Acting in film and television has its own special needs and skills to be effective and natural on camera. Technical demands include what type of camera shot will be used, where do you look, how do you follow action that crosses the camera, how do you contain the action within the camera shot and how do you fill the film frame with a true and honest physical life. More importantly, how do you create a natural and dynamic performance on camera? You cannot “present” your concept of the scene but you must “experience” the reality of the scene and learn to “allow” yourself to instantly create the relationship between your character and the other characters. You can’t cheat on camera! Through exercise work you’ll gain access to the emotional motivations necessary to create dynamic and honest characters. You’ll learn to allow the scene to evolve, moment by moment, and experience the reality of the scenes imaginary world. Working with the camera you begin to understand it is your friend and you learn to trust your instincts, which will lead to an intimacy and relationship with viewers. The camera is a tool you learn to use that allows the audience to look into your soul.
